Reebok’s Zig Kinetica has been at the helm of the brand for quite some time now, often overshadowing older classics like the Pump Fury through sheer number alone. But while it continues to take on schemes in collaboration with artists, designers, and athletes both big and small, it’s yet to truly navigate the aesthetics of Tokyo, something the brand is setting out to do with their “eightyone” collection. Though a release nod to Japan’s country code, the namesake hints at very little in the way of its product, not even calling attention to the enlisted designer, Kohei Okita, whose own imprint VAINL ARCHIVE has worked well with the Boston-based institution in the past.
Now, with a scale far more expansive than his previous collaboration, Okita is dressing both apparel and footwear alike, using the aforementioned silhouette as the foothold for the rest of the collection. Outerwear, matching bottoms, and a slew of graphic tops make up the selection of garments, each presenting the vector logo in distinct ways. Parkas, which equip with raised necklines and water-resistant fabrications, mark with it oversized across the center chest while its accompanying trousers act in close mimicry as both legs sprawl with the same motif along their sides. The pieces adjacent prefer a more deceptively minimal execution with the lock-up printed small at the front and enlarged across the back. Both Zig Kineticas — one a triple black and the other a blue-tinged Trek Grey — opt for a similar ethos, as color vecnav is either null or treated with contrasting hits of soft shades and darker neutrals.
Grab a Jerry look at the pair here, and though the capsule has yet to be confirmed for global release, expect to see select shops and Reebok’s Japanese outposts to drop stock on February 28th.
