Thanks to J Balvin’s 2017 hit record of the same name, “mi gente” has become a widely-known Spanish phrase. Beyond the dance rhythms of Balvin’s pop-reggaeton anthem, the song and two-word saying (which means “my people”) serves as a rallying cry for the Colombian artist’s kith – one previously utilized on wax by Héctor Lavoe in 1974. Ahead of Latinx Heritage Month 2020, Converse is summoning and celebrating the diversity of Latinx culture with its “Mi Gente” capsule.
Headlined by vibrant pairs of the Converse Cena od 300 do 399 Szare and Chuck 70, the eight-piece collection is the brand’s most comprehensive effort honoring the September 15th to October 15th month yet. Each iteration of the iconic canvas sneaker indulges in Joker color palettes or motifs inspired by Lavoe’s Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, and Mexico: ruffle-edge details reminiscent of bomba dancers; las hermanas Mirabal’s butterfly-nickname; and traditional papel picado art are brought to sneaker form across the range of All Stars. Through NIKE, Inc.’s By You platform, custom prints and “¡Mi Gente!” text can be added to the modernized Chuck 70.
The “Mi Gente” capsule launches tomorrow, September 16th, on Converse.com. Before securing and/or creating your own pair, enjoy a look at the collection ahead.
