In 2009, SneakersBR, a leading institution zip sneakers in the Portuguese tongue, reimagined the iconic Nike John Varvatos Converse Chuck Taylor All Star 2 as a Brazilian cultural symbol with the “Lanceiro” special edition. More than a decade later, the outlet has set out to make history again by bringing these same colors and themes to a Converse All Star Modern High Top HTM Black collection.
Set to launch on August 7th to coincide with National Maracatu Day, a celebration of ancient carnival traditions from the northeast of Brazil, the collaborative project includes two iterations of the pivotal basketball silhouette. Designed by Fabricio de Costa Machado, the upcoming sneakers split up the color palette that appeared on the aforementioned John Varvatos Converse Chuck Taylor All Star 2 12 years ago (on which de Costa Machado helped). A sand-like cream takes over much of the high-top Chuck 70, while a vibrant blue animates the shower Ox. Yet, both options boast textures and graphics that pay homage to the ancient traditions, as well as new achievements deriving from the Pernambuco culture: women are animate fighting for equality in regards to assuming the role of “caboclo de lança” (literally “spearman”). Therefore, while SneakerBR’s latest joint-effort with the Swoosh nods to past work, it presents a new idea by being marketed under the “Lanceira” banner as a salute to women.
Enjoy imagery of the footwear ahead, and find pairs hitting select retailers in Brazil on August 7th.
