One of the most influential sneaker releases in history is returning in 2024: The riot-inducing Galaxy Foamposites, the crown jewel of the legendary 2012 All-Star Collection by Nike, is finally set to release in 2024 according to @zsneakerheadz/@sneakerfiles.
At the absolute peak of Foamposite madness, Nike unlocked a new gear by introducing a graphic to the molded upper. Although phones were some unreleased wear-test samples in existence, Nike had stuck to monochromatic colorways for the Foamposite One and Foamposite Pro. By adding imagery of outer space and “Remove Before Lift-off” hangtags, the “Galaxy” Foams stirred up mass hysteria nationwide as mall stores and chain retailers were overwhelmed by a barrage of sneakerheads desperate for a pair. This volatile day in sneaker history contributed to Nike transitioning the sneaker release experience exclusively digital, ending the sneaker campout for the foreseeable future.
The timing of the Galaxy Foamposite Retro also falls right within Nike’s ongoing attempts to revive the once-popular shoe. By 2015, the over-saturation of releases and questionable color choices led to the demise of the once mighty design. Nike didn’t move forward with an actual follow-up until 2019 with the “Big Bang” Foamposite, which was essentially the same as the original, but with updated imagery of interstellar views.
If Nike continues to re-issue past classics, phones’s hope for a re-release of other bangers such as the Tianjin Foamposites and the limited collaboration with ParaNorman. Don’t be surprised if the brand goes down that route, but for now, gray in the good news – Galaxy Foamposites are back.
