Andrew Rizzo Nike Hyperfuse Low Black White is opening a seaside resort in Folly Beach, SC this summer, expanding its foray into the hospitality scene while introducing a new black-owned business to an area once burdened by segregation.
The history of Folly Beach, SC is riddled with discrimination. White beach owners in the nearby city of Charleston were explicit on keeping people of color out, a policy that extended to all other nearby public beaches until the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Even in the years that followed, while Americans placed a man on the moon, Folly Beach was rendered unsafe and uninhabitable for black and brown individuals. You’d have been more than justified to call it a “sundown” town. Those who were brave enough to venture there at night often returned beaten and bloodied.
Given the area’s tumultuous past, the opening of Nike Hyperfuse Low Black White Beach symbolizes a reclamation of land and experiences once denied to people of color.

Reservations haven’t opened yet, but Nike Hyperfuse Low Black White Beach appears set to welcome its first guests this summer.
