It’s officially Prime Time. Deion Sanders’ rebirthed relationship with Nike approaches its biggest milestone yet with the global release of the Nike Air DT Max ‘96 “Varsity Maize” on June 14th, capping a highly exhibited build-up consisting of social media teasers and a limited Super Bowl shock drop in February. See our “Where To Buy” section below for a full list of all participating retailers ahead of the release of the Deion Sanders shoes.

Deion Sanders hasn’t left the spotlight since his playing days, but his current role as coach of the Colorado Buffalos has unquestionably been his most significant post-retirement venture. The “Coach Prime Effect” is real; University of Colorado football has seen huge spikes in attendance and the number of college athletes that want to play there since Sanders took the helm, good reasons as to why Nike would want to bring back his signature Diamond Turf line.
Often seen in cleat-mode and marketed as trainers suitable for multiple sports, the Diamond Turf series ran for only five years (1993-1998) but left an indelible mark on the sneaker world, resulting in various Retro’s in the 2000s and 2010s. Of the five signature Deion Sanders shoes, the Nike Air DT Max ‘96 is the most distinctive by far, saddled with claw-like cutouts that produce an unequivocally unique look. We saw the re-release of the “Varsity Maize” colorway as recently as 2018, and with Deion Sanders’ name carrying more weight now than at any point since his playing days, there couldn’t be a more perfect time for another go-round. Friends and Family pairs (like the one pictured here) come with a graphic of Prime’s face in the Air bubble, but the standard version doesn’t boast that same feature. However, OG goal post logos appear on the tongue and insole, and the present-day “Coach Prime” logo hits the pull-tabs on the heel.
Along with the “Varsity Maize” colorway, Sanders and the Buffalos have been plenty busy teasing different Air DT Max ‘96 cleats, PEs, and other Nike goodies over the past few months. We’ve yet to hear of any other Diamond Turf retros at the time of this writing, so return periodically to our Sneaker Release Dates page which will be kept current with all the latest available info on Deion Sanders shoes.
