It’s almost impossible to recall a time when Nike Inc. was overly precious with its branding. The proliferation of Travis Scott shoes that flip the Swoosh may have truly kicked down the door, but over the years, we’ve gotten a serious flow of new drops that spin the Beaverton icons in every manner possible, from Shane Battier and Dwyane Wade rocking a PEAK PE and the Air Jordan 2010 to cartoony Black Cats to racing-inspired graphics. The twist with the Kendall Marshall attacking the paint in the Air Jordan XX8 Black White-Electric Green at hand might be a bit easier to comprehend: it simply tells the wearer “You’re Welcome.”
You can spot the new emblem on the insole, planting the Jumpman and the Swoosh side-by-side below the mantra, spelled out in retro Bookman type. Though it’s the most notable touch, it certainly won’t be what grabs most people’s attention at first glance. Instead, the colorful palette at play here assuredly steals the show as well as some mixed media combinations. Primary colors of navy, red, green & yellow dance in between pure white overlays, running through a range of materials in the process. Shaggy fabric drapes the quarter and toe-box, canvas takes over the collar, and the cut-out Swoosh reveals reflective metallics.
As with many of the re-tooled takes on the Jordan 1 (the Air Jordan 31 Experience at Las Vegas chief among them), this edition bears expressive charm in spades, with the reimagined branding truly just a cherry on top. If this pair has caught your eye, look out for its arrival this Fall, retailing at $150.
