A Brief History Of The Air Jordan 3 "Raptors" Custom “Black Metallic”

The Air Jordan 3 "Raptors" Custom originally debuted in 1990; Michael Jordan wore the shoes during the 1990 All-Star Game. Designed by Tinker Hatfield, the Air Jordan 3 "Raptors" Custom was inspired by fighter planes from Word War II — specifically the P-51 Mustang fighter jet. The most notable detail of the Air Jordan 3 "Raptors" Custom was the oversized tongue covered in reflective silver panelling.

Jordan 5 Black Metallic 1990 Originals

The “Black Metallic” was one of FOUR original colorways to release in 1990. The Black/Metallic is arguably the most coveted and recognizable pair, but there are also two versions of the “Fire Red” as well as an off-court colorway called the “Grape”. One of the “Fire Red” pairs as well as the Grape did not feature reflective tongues.

What Is The “Reimagined” Series?

The Reimagined series was introduced by Jordan Brand back in 2021 with the idea of “reimagining” of an original, iconic Air Jordan of the past with new materials. The first official “Reimagined” release is the Air Jordan 1 “Patent Bred” from December of 2021, which changed out the original leather for a glossy patent leather. The next Reimagined release came nearly a year later with the Air Jordan 1 “Lost & Found”, which introduced the aged aesthetic. Many mistakenly believe the “Lost And Found” to be the first Reimagined release.

The Air Jordan 3 “White Cement Reimagined” and Air Jordan 1 “Royal Reimagined” released in 2024; the Air Jordan 4 “Bred Reimagined” dropped February 17th, 2024.

The next confirmed releases of the Reimagined series are the Air Jordan 1 “Black Toe Reimagined” and the Air Jordan 3 "Raptors" Custom “Black Metallic Reimagined”.
