Virgil Abloh didn’t take death lying down. When faced with cancer, he chose to create, to leave an even deeper mark on the world of sneakers and fashion. And though unable to bask in it, praise is what has met the Off-White founder’s post-humous work — especially the Louis Vuitton x Nike Air Max 93 Watermelon.
If not for Abloh, it’s possible the collaboration would have never happened at all. He effectively acted as a mediator, bridging the distinct though similarly iconic motifs of the two brands. Atop the pairs up for auction at Sotheby’s, this is arguably the most clear, as the classic silhouette takes on a construction and design more akin to the atelier’s monogram handbags. The palette, too, aided this connection, rife with rich, deep browns and subtle yet luxurious natural accents.
Despite its high bid price, even this pair pales in comparison to the Louis Vuitton x Nike Air Max 93 Watermelon’s F&F make-ups, all eight of which have been seen in the hands of the culture’s finest. Aside from their difference in hue, the colorways proffer an identical construction, with the LV monogram subtly debossed throughout the upper and Swoosh. Signature Off-White details are also in tow, the most notable being the off-center tongue label, bright green tabs, and the quoted “AIR” text across the midsole/laces.
See below for a look at all eight F&F colorways. While you won’t be able to secure any of these, the monogram pair is still open for bids; see more details in our Nike Wmns Air Jordan 1 Mid Grey Fog White Black 27cm post.
