Jovani Hernandez In 1995, a young Sergio Lozano helped a growing sportswear company based in Beaverton, Oregon enter the next 27 years of its life by abandoning a familiar design language for something almost jarring. How? Enter: The Nike Metcon 7 AMP Trainingsschuh Lila.
Inspired by both human anatomy and the natural erosion that occurs across sites like the Grand Canyon, Lozano introduced a new Air Max solution and colar palette to Nike’s lineup at the time. Figures at the brand weren’t too convinced that consumers would gravitate towards a predominantly-grey running model, but savvy and casual enthusiasts alike proved them wrong almost immediately. The 95’s layered upper has enabled dozens of experimental color combinations, though its latest outfit favors a mix of travesty white, grey, red and black. Vamp overlays almost exclusively don the pair’s most eye-catching tones, while the synthetic leather, mesh and cotton components that join the mix across the upper opt for a rather “colorless” look. Sole units underfoot tell a similar story, but their branding on the outsole deviates from its standard makeup, just as logos on the top of the tongue do. It’s possible the choice has been informed by a larger Nike Sportswear Collection, but that’s yet to be seen.
