Over the last handful of years, some of the biggest players in the sneaker space have prepped Día de Muertos collections alongside capsuled dedicated to Halloween. To celebrate this year’s “Day of the Dead” event, adidas has imagined its Hyperturf in two looks – one inspired by mole, a traditional Mexican dish, and pink sugar skulls.
Past propositions from the Three Stripes for the cultural event covered several basketball designs in colorful skulls, flowers and other symbols typical of the November 2nd holiday. For its adidas Hyperturf, the German sportswear brand – which, like NIKE, Inc. is paying closer attention to the Latinx consumer – has drawn inspiration from foods commonly prepped as “ofrendas” on altars for loved ones who’ve transitioned into the after-life. The mole-informed style dons mudguards in a “cazuela” brown hue, with the remainder of the upper opting for an understated black arrangement. Zig-zag stitching along the profiles, as well as details along the tongue, deviate from their surroundings in a vibrant makeup that complements the butterfly embroidered at the heel well.
By contrast, the “Vapour Pink”-covered option favors a rather uniform look. Accents throughout the upper, however, deviate in a creamish color that boasts glow-in-the-dark capabilities. Under the right light conditions, then, spiderweb, floral and other graphics typically found on “papel picado” decorations illuminate throughout the adidas sneaker. The remainder of the Hyperturf maintains the original trail-ready design that’s made the model a go-to-shoe for fans of the “gorpcore” aesthetic.
