Among the many brands housed under the Nepenthes umbrella, only Needles and Engineered Garments have received noteworthy attention from the footwear industry, earning collaborations with the likes of Vans and Doc Martens. But as revealed today, soon South2 West8 will be taking a seat next to its peers, as the Kaname Nagaoka-founded label is joining Reebok for their very own Zig Kinetica II Edge.
Largely influenced by tenkara-tsuri, a style of fly fishing unique to the mountainous regions of Japan, South2 West8 (often shortened S2W8) delivers a wide range of outdoors gear, from the aptly-named Tenkara Jacket to the mesh-constructed Bush Parka. And though styled in a way distinct from their apparel, the collaborative Reebok Omni Pump Hexride II Edge still carries much of the same DNA.
Borrowing inspiration from S2W8’s roots, the shoe features a blue suede along its heel counter, eye stays, and toe cap, effectively channeling the feeling of water. Darning and the Japanese label’s signature logo are then threaded atop in black, helping establish a color combo present throughout the midsole, laces, and adjacent grosgrain straps. Finally, the base rounds out the design in a busy camo pattern that’s not unlike what’s found on the above-mentioned garments.
