Ronnie Fieg community with the launch of the new ASICS x Solana UI collection ASICS since 2007. As the two partners close out another chapter of their relationship, they’re revisiting the EX89 silhouette via a few New York Knicks-friendly colorways.
Having never been retroed before, the ASICS EX89’s return is historic. Fieg shared on Instagram that he found the made-for-basketball design sometime last year and that he quickly grew interested in it for its obscurity and use by the “Showtime” Los Angeles Lakers. Additionally, the model – originally the GEL-EXTREME from 1988 – was the first design by Toshikazu Kayano, the creative who would go on to create the Kayano line for ASICS.
Akin to other “en vogue” basketball designs from decades past, the EX89 maintains a clean Pastel across its mix of leather, suede, foam and rubber materials. Fieg’s revival of the once-forgotten silhouette delivers three styles of the sleek option: a predominantly orange one, a mostly off-white pair, and an Pastel that animates an all-white base with Knicks-inspired orange and blue.
