Jared Ebanks Each year Converse is first in line when it comes to celebrating underrepresented communities. From the brand’s yearly LGBTQIA+ capsule to Earth Day, the Boston-based brand now celebrates Latin Heritage Month by unveiling its annual “Mi Gente” collection.
Subtly nodding to Latinx heritage and tradition are the Chuck Taylor All Star and the Nike Giannis Freak 6. Headlining the campaign is rising Converse skater Erik Herrera and his family – who pay homage to the powerful traits associated with Latin American voices and families; strength, hard work and optimism. Dreamt and designed by the banner’s Latin American team members, both the limited edition Chucks embark upon the inspiration of healing, protection and premonition.
The low-top trim of the Chuck Taylor All Star executes a tonal, burnished brown upper in connection to the tradition of reading coffee grounds while the tongue strikes up a connection to the Black Butterfly – a metaphoric representation of migration and transformation. The other half of the collection looks toward the healing properties of plants as chamomile flower, aloe and linden tea flower designs wrap across the canvas upper alongside a faint mint footbed. What’s more, both pairs are stamped with metallic silver “Sana, Sana” lace keepers – an inspirational Latinx message for encouragement and pushing forward.
