Rick Owens and Converse were always a match made in heaven. The similarities between Chuck 70s and DRKSHDW footwear opened a pale of comparisons before the duo officially joined forces, paving way for an assortment of avant-garde re-imaginations at the hands of the SoCal fashion icon. One of the chunkiest of the bunch, the double-stacked Converse DBL DRKSHDW, saw its first public release last summer and now returns for another go-round in “Washed Grey.”
While last year’s pairs featured traditional canvas up top, this latest version opts for a heavily distressed, washed-out look. Beat-up Chuck 70s have been a staple look in every era, albeit most often arrived at naturally through heavy wear. Like many Rick Owens x Converse shoes, the choice comes as a Boro and relevant mens of looks actor’s well-established design ethos.
Transitioning underfoot, the shoe’s “DBL” title comes into play via two stacked-up Chuck 70 soles, drastically increasing the shoe’s height and driving its aesthetic further down the avenue of unique, abstract footwear. Funnily enough, the shoe’s $180 price tag is equal to that of two $90 Chuck 70s.
