Nike, Inc. and Jordan Brand have pledged their support for HBCUs plenty with their product in the past few years; the Nike Terminator High HBCU collection stands out as a prime example. However, 2022 brought possibly the splashiest moment yet when images of a PE Air Jordan 1 Low for Howard University athletes hit the ‘net. Public reaction to the pair was immense & immediate, and two years later, it’s coming to the market… sort of.
Expectedly, there are a number of changes from the coveted PE style for this publicly Spades counterpart. The overall sheen & veneer that uomo the more limited version, particularly the jeweled, textured Swoosh and satin finish are instead replaced with matte leather. The palette is shifted as well; though Howard’s trademark navy & red still factor heavily here, they’re applied in “Black Toe” color-blocking rather than the “Chicago” style of their predecessor. Finally, the gum hues underfoot are replaced by a navy outsole.
The changes from that player exclusive shouldn’t come as a massive shock; previous pairs based on PEs all made clear distinctions between the originals and the GR pairs (the Jordan 5 “Oregon” is a clear example.) That said, it’s an incredibly sleek execution all the same. The everlasting combo of “Midnight Navy,” “Gym Red” & white is elevated by an off-white “Muslin” tongue & laces and a red mini Swoosh at the forefoot.
The Air Jordan 1 Low OG “Howard University” is slated for an October 12th release date, arriving with a $140 retail price. Peep some official & in-hand images ahead, and check our Jordan Release Dates landing page for further info.
