When it comes to signature sneakers, we all think one thing: Superstar athletes. There’s a straightforward yet particular formula behind a signature shoe that includes a powerhouse brand teaming up with a super marketable sports star who collaborates with a talented designer to create a masterpiece. That’s the case with the new Li-Ning Way of Wade 4, but it’s how we got to this point that’s such a remarkable story. One of the most hard working, marketable, supremely talented athletes in the NBA over the last decade has been Miami Heat star Dwyane Wade. He grew up in Chicago and after high school attended Marquette University just north of Chicago in Milwaukee, WI; it was his sophomore season that he came into his own, winning Conference Player of the Year, being named to the 2003 Consensus All-America team, and leading his team to the 2003 Final Four.
Upon entering the league, his marketability was undeniable. He signed a shoe deal with Converse right out of college that spawned a short-lived signature sneaker line, and his rise to stardom as well as his association with the outspoken Shaquille O’neal was key in making Wade a household name. Little did Heat fans know that drafting “Flash” would be the start of a beautiful partnership that produced three NBA Titles, all while their new superstar shooting guard became the all-time leader in games played, points, assists, and steals for the franchise, not to mention notching 11-straight All Star appearances dating back to 2005, winning the All Star Game MVP Award in 2010, and of course being named the 2006 NBA Finals MVP. In addition, Wade has become a huge part of the sports community in Miami and is heralded as one of the few remaining one-team superstars.

Wade, like all of us, grew up idolizing Michael Jordan in Chicago. In 2010, Dwyane moved from Converse over to his childhood hero’s company Jordan Brand, where he was immediately inserted as the “heir” to the throne. What appeared to be a match made in heaven was hardly that; both of his Fly Wade signature shoes didn’t sell well, mostly because of the lackluster and over-simplified design. In 2012, Wade’s initial contract with Jordan was up and found himself in a unique juncture. This is where it gets good. That Summer, he chose to leave Jordan Brand to create his own legacy, and in the case of his shoe line, his own way.
Wade says, “Four years ago when we decided to leave Jordan Brand and take our talents to China, a lot of people asked why I’d do that. To leave for a new brand was about the opportunity I had with Li-Ning to use my voice. Sometimes the top athletes don’t have a lot of say in everything that comes out, so I wanted to be more involved and have more control of something that has my name on it. Li-Ning gave me a great platform to do that. I knew it was going to be hard to make it work but it was a chance I was willing to take.”
Rex Chiang, Marketing Director for Li-Ning Basketball talks about the partnership with the Heat star and how the brand and Wade found the common value of fighting for and leading your own dream.
When talking about the evolution of his Way of Wade signature line Wade said, “For the first shoe we wanted to do a shoe that translated on and off the court. After a few rounds we came out with the WoW1. I wanted the sneakerheads to be involved with the brand from the beginning. Our first few shoes were all about premium leather but we’re at the point now where we’re able to do more things. Right now it’s about mesh and different materials on shoes so we jumped into that business but we’ve kept our same beliefs as to how the shoe should perform. That’s why if you look at the evolution of these shoes, you will see that the Wow4 is quite a bit different than the 1,2, and 3.”
Wade on being active on social media to see what his fans want: “This shoe, this year, the Wade 4 is where we wanted to get to in a sense of listening to our consumers. That was something I wanted to do with the Wade brand is to listen to our fan base. I troll Instagram and Twitter and I read comments about Li-Ning and Wade and I’ll talk to people back. If they have questions about my shoes, I’ll reply back. I want to know what the fans want to see from us.”

Dwyane Wade: The WoW4 is my favorite shoe of the series. We sat down and talked about doing something a little different for this year’s shoe. We decided to go a different way with the launch colorway. When Eric (Wade Creative Director) brought this color to me, it was at All Star in New York. When I saw it, I wanted to wear it right then and there. I was excited about the color when I saw it, so this is my favorite colorway. Also, this is the first time I’ve played in a shoe with this collar height. I usually wear a shoe with a higher collar, so these are nice. This is the lightest shoe I’ve played in as well.
SN: Can you talk about the strategy of the release of the shoe?
DW: A lot of people ask me, “Where can I find your shoes?” and I tell them we are trying to keep these very exclusive to stick with the real core, real fans of the brand. I never want to walk into a store and see dust on it. So we are keeping it small. We’re releasing smaller quantities and the price point is $190 because it’s very exclusive.

SN: Talk about carving your own lane and how important that is to you.
DW: We’re at a time in the world where it’s ok to find your own lane and to be comfortable in that. I think I’ve proven that I’m a “My own lane” type of person. When it comes to my thought process, I look at trends and I listen to what the fans want and do things I’m comfortable with. That’s what I did with Li-Ning. It was time for me to make a different move. I was with the Nike umbrella for 9 years and it was great but when my contract was up, I felt that this was an opportunity for me to do something bigger. For the first time, it was on me and I like the ball in my hands at the end of the game.

DW: I played the game just like very kid, because I love it. To sit back and see how far I’ve come in 13 years, if you add college 15 years from the day I walked up to Marquette, if you would have given me a pencil and a piece of paper then and you would have asked me what my career would be, I would have never been able to write all these things. It’s amazing to see where life can take you. I’m being me along the way, enjoying life and enjoying the game of basketball. So many things happen when you meet people and go so many different places and I’m just taking advantage of it.
SN: Can you talk about the WoW4 “Lucky 13” colorway?
DW: With the “Lucky 13” colorway being the one I’ll debut on court paying homage to my 13th season and a lot of people remember me as “Flash”, I thought it was a cool story with the lightning bolts marking the gold ones as my Championships, so I gave the nod.
I understand what the “Flash” nickname means to a lot of people, so it’s a cool story to be able to put on my shoe. I will always be “Flash” even though I’m not as fast as I used to be.”
Some of the notable updates to the Wade shoe this year include a new layered mesh system that makes the shoe lighter, a lower collar for more ankle mobility, a new foam midsole allowing for more absorption during high impact, an aggressively molded carbon fiber shank and a unique outsole pattern based on Wade’s #3. Most notably, it’s the lowest-cut shoe that Wade has worn yet.
The season kicks off with three WoW4 color ups: the launch colorway, deemed “Liberty” which is available today, October 23rd, the “Lucky 13” colorway, a nod to this being Wade’s 13th season in the league hits Wednesday, October 28th and the “25th Anniversary” colorway celebrating Li-Ning’s 25th Anniversary / the “Silver Jubilee” will drop the day before Thanksgiving, on Wednesday November 25th. It should be noted that another 15 colorways will be releasing between now and July of next year, so stay tuned.
The Way of Wade 4 will be available at WayofWade.com, Fanatics.com and The Edition Boutique in Miami.
