High-end ateliers have long been enamored with sneaker culture, with labels the likes of SLP and Balenciaga taking the world by storm with their Air Jordan 1 homages and bulky Triple S runners, respectively. But in the case of Lanvin, their flagship Bumper silhouette more so honors its inspirations rather than subverts, with its craft a close love letter to some of the 70’s most definitive shapes.
As the first of its kind by the brand’s newly appointed creative director, Bruno Sialelli, the silhouette embarks on a fresh vintage-influenced approach, with its every construction a close likeness to the icons in and of itself. Its latest colorway, which is fittingly a Concepts exclusive, paints an alluring black and yellow pairing with constructions of nylon, suede, and leather. The latter two materials — found to overlay minimally across the entire upper — stamp at both the heel wrap and toe with branded Ls adorning the profile. But while the logo strips break out in a polished yellow tone, the adjacent paneling quietly pay homage to the ever-classic Germany Army Trainer in their placements. Elsewhere, heel supports protrude outward to brutalist aesthetic, hanging Stateside a waffle-esque tooling whose midsole walls are finished with a worn, distressed treatment.
