This generation’s youth has arguably been getting involved in mass social activism like never before. With the likes of TikToks to spread awareness to online petitions garnering millions of signatures, today we are equipped with numerous methods of promoting social causes. The Philadelphia-based studio Garrixon and Italian sportswear brand Diadora have been able to use footwear as an expression of anti-discrimination via the release of the Diadora Duratech Elite “LIMITLESS”.
The design relies on the genius of a team of New York City middle school and high school students who participated in the 2019 Straight to Feet workshop hosted by Incorp[HER]ated, a diversity and inclusion agency. Challenged to create a tennis shoe tied to a significant cultural/social cause, the winning team and Garrixon adds alternate pink and blue suede overlays to the Diadora Duratech Elite, symbolizing the destruction of gender stereotypes. The holographic side striping alludes to the inclusivity of all people across the spectrums and intersections of race, age, gender, and sexual orientation. “LIMITLESS” is embossed on the hindfoot as motivation to achieve any goal, inspired by Coco Gauff—an example of someone who has overcome age, sex, and race barriers to reach success.
The pair will drop on Footlocker’s Greenhouse app on February 5th for $175.
