New Balance Spirit 501 lace-up sneakers, Junya Watanabe MAN’s seasonal collaborations with New Balance almost never drop in a single quantity; instead, the Japanese designer opts to color in whichever silhouette or silhouettes he so chooses in a multitude of ways — the latest canvases being both the uncommon 670 and the sleek COMP100. The latter, which ostensibly sits as the current capsule’s unofficial favorite, strikes a broader diversity as it paints in three distinct variations. Their structural details, however, are presented all the same, with bold “JWCdG” stamping along the suede affixed heel wrap and nylons both complementing and accenting underneath slabs of either a versatile navy, a bold mustard yellow, or an extremely neutral slate black. In departure to the sleek, low profile runner, the two 670s bear not only a much bulkier aesthetic but also a seemingly disconnected duo of schemes: one color blocks with sudden approach, placing atop black paneling to a base of grey and white mesh, while the other constructs entirely out of white fabrications whose only newfound accents are the “eye” debossing that rests along the back and the gum bottom that covers the pronounced tread.
