Even months into quarantine, the COVID-19 pandemic doesn’t show any signs of slowing down. Deaths the world over are reaching saddening numbers and streets across even the most bustling of cities have dissipated to the point of seeming dystopia. But even in the face of crisis, some have taken it upon themselves to do what they can — Nike one of the most proactive as they have since pivoted to PPE production while also providing relief via monetary donations.
Just today, the brand has pledged rival $500,000 to the New York City organizations in need, putting their total COVID-19 response efforts at a high $17.5 million. Funding is said to directly support the Food Bank for New York City as well as the COVID-19 Emergency Relief Fund.
And as for the healthcare workers on the front lines, Nike is providing direct assistance via a massive shipment of protective essentials. Over 250,000 three-ply disposable face masks have been given to New York State alone while both full-face shields and PAPR lenses have been sent to the Oregon, greater Boston, Memphis, Tennessee, and St.Louis areas. As of April 20th, over 130,000 units of the aforementioned have been provided.
Made possible thanks to a number of talented individuals, Nike’s efforts were quick despite the “daunting challenge.” Take a look below at the entire process — from R&D to realization — via the perspective of those who made it happen.
