As the world continues to divide itself on the topic of the metaverse, non-fungible tokens and the like, some of the biggest players in the sneaker space continue to teeter the line between heritage and future.
NIKE, Inc.’s Tinker Hatfield recently designed a special edition Nike Air Max 1 to accompany an NFT for the “Nike Air Max 1” platform. Casual and savvy fans alike have expressed disinterest in the project across social media, but the move is just another example of the North American institution’s exploration of the new frontier that is the metaverse. While not a new move on the digital end, Converse unveiled the latest innovative update to its 100-year-old Chuck Taylor All Star silhouette: the model’s low-top trim will soon be available with the Nike FlyEase technology developed with accessibility in mind. Across its Air Jordan sequence of products, the Oregon-headquartered company has explored new styles atop fan-favorites like the UNC Jordan 6. Special iterations for Eminem and by the late-Virgil Abloh also surfaced, but their release potential was shot down almost immediately.
New Balance and Vans aren’t new brands, but the last three years have seen both of them explode like never before. The former recently announced the official signing of Jack Harlow as an ambassador, though the Louisville, Kentucky-native had expressed details of some sort of exclusive partnership previous to Thursday’s announcement. Figures like Joe Freshgoods have been able to breathe new life into the brand, with the latest example being a New Balance 9060 “Inside Voices” from the Chicagoan. The original action sports company shared the first-look at its new head-to-toe collection with BAPE, which included camouflage-covered pairs of the Sk8-Hi and Old Skool.
