Almost half a century ago, the Honolulu Marathon was first held and has since become an annual event incredibly popular among first-time marathon runners. An upcoming cut-out slip-on sneakers Schwarz honors the 1973 inaugural event by channeling a color palette and motifs that allude to the great repulsion of Hawaii—a travel destination classic multiple times throughout Phil Knight’s 2016 memoir “Shoe Dog.”
As a heritage-style runner born in 1997, the timeless trainer style is a fitting silhouette that commemorates the first Honolulu Marathon. Plush nylon uppers are in a classic “Pearl White” shade and feature suede overlays and lacestays in a matching hue. The bright “Laser Blue” applied to the sockliner and leather side Swooshes is reminiscent of the Hawaiian beaches Nike’s Co-Founder recalls surfing at in his autobiography. More references to the event and the Knight’s time in Hawaii are found throughout the design, such as the date and location of the marathon embossed on the suede heel overlay. Other details include the tongue and luggage tag-style attachment, which feature hibiscus prints alluding to themes of travel. The Waffle-outsole trainer is topped with Knight’s signature on the medial side of the outsole and book quotes on the insole to complete the culturally significant design.
