BEHIND CLOSED DOORS
While the general public will never know the true extent of what goes on behind the scenes of the sneaker industry, Kyrie Irving gave spectators a peek of the inner workings of the signature athlete-NIKE, Inc. relationship. Taking to an Instagram post delivering the first look at the Nike Kyrie 8, the Brooklyn Nets guard left a 50+ word response detailing his disapproval of the upcoming design. Flat-out calling the basketball sneaker “trash!,” Irving is the second high-profile person to clash with the Swoosh regarding the management of a sneaker release. Vanessa Bryant called out the brand earlier in the year for seemingly moving forward with the Nike Kobe series without her consent. Negative signature athlete sentiment towards certain sneaker designs isn’t new, but very rarely does the audience get a full display of resentment from individual to corporation. The future of the Nike Kyrie line is unsure, but what’s certain is that the world is paying attention.
Elsewhere under the NIKE, Inc. banner, Travis Scott and Hiroshi Fujiwara by way of his fragment design imprint stole headlines with their three-day Air Jordan 1 Low OG collaboration. Set to launch in August, the pair serves as the second style under what’ll surely be a historic partnership. Patta, UNDEFEATED, Off-White and A Ma Maniére also (unofficially) teased future collaborations, but they all took a back-seat to La Flame’s next swoosh-backed project.
IT’S BEEN A WHILE
Throughout the last seven days, the Nike Air Mowabb appeared in official images, suggesting a retro run has been prepped for the model’s 30th anniversary. Although the outdoors-inspired silhouette is set to return in its original “Birch” colorway, the pair has already received some criticism for not following a one-to-one build from 1991. Jeremy Scott unofficially shared a look at the first retro under his renewed partnership with the Three Stripes: the adidas Forum Wings 1.0 “Money” from 2013. However, the “blast-from-the-past” pair that unquestionably stole the show was the Air Jordan 11 “Cool Grey”. Last seen in 2010, the retro was initially believed to be scheduled for 2020 as part of the silhouette’s 25th anniversary. Now at the end of July, in-hand images of the shoes and trusted sources point to the non-original take on Michael Jordan’s 11th signature sneaker launching on December 11th.
This Week In adidas Collaborations was all-but-confirmed by none other than YEEZY MAFIA. Along with news of the anticipated August 2nd “holiday,” previously-seen and new YEEZYs surfaced, confirming Kanye West is juggling music, clothes and footwear along with what’s surely dozens of other things. The celebratory event isn’t new, but it hasn’t been established in the same way that Nike’s Air Max Day has, for example. Nevertheless, the day is anticipated to introduce new models while focusing on handfuls of restocks.
