To the uninformed, the Waste Management Open sounds more like a garbage man convention than a golf tournament. In reality, the event (officially dubbed the Phoenix Open) is home to the largest crowds in the sport as well as some of the most iconic holes on the PGA Tour. As we approach this year’s tournament starting on February 8th, Nike unveils perhaps its most adventurous golf shoe to date, inspired by the aesthetics of, well, trash.
The upcoming Nike Air Pegasus ’89 Golf boasts a mix of semi-glossy waste themed overlays, although it’s unknown whether or not the materials are genuinely recycled or engineered for visual purposes. However, given Nike’s well documented commitment to sustainability in design, using previously discarded plastics wouldn’t come as a surprise. While the shoe’s boast a mix of color throughout, eyes are first drawn to the deep blue overlays on the toe and heel, sitting just underneath a transparent TPU overlay of a lighter hue. More unique details include collage-esque prints on the insole and outsole, along with abstract Nike branding and a stamp that reads “take out the trash” inside.
No release information has been made public, but look for that to change soon as we get closer to the tournament’s start date. It’s very possible we see a Phoenix-exclusive shock drop or cheap special release celebration surrounding the event. In any case, enjoy official images below and return to our Sneaker Release Dates page as we continue to learn more.
