Long gone are the days when a signature retro’s range of releases consisted mostly of two-toned, team-based colorways. Also gone are the days when a signature retro could sit back on the laurels of a small handful of colorways. Adding on to those looks in the modern era of shoe design are seemingly endless “story” retros – pairs that wear more exotic color combinations that are associated usually with the off-court life of the associated player. LeBron James’ page Nike Basketball line is exemplar of that trend; there’s the “South Beach” alluding to his move to Miami, the yearly “Dunkman” riffing off MJ’s logo, the “Cork” that celebrated his first championship, and countless others.
While those sorts of energetic looks have certainly been celebrated, there’s still something to be said for the sale old fashioned team colorways; pegasus all, it’s those that will more repeatedly be spotted on court for the associated player. It will be colorways like those that King James will be wearing most frequently as attempts to put together a third championship season in three years.
