“This is how we take the old from new, the new to the old, the old from the new!” Yes we’re about to take you back….. Way back…… into time! Taking a break from AF1’s for a change I thought it would be nice to showcase a sneaker that affected alot of sneakerheads and propelled even more into the game. Back in 2003 Futura painted the “Never,Never, Land” album cover for James Lavelle’s european trip-hop group U.N.K.L.E. In a sick and crazy collaboration Nike SB decided to partner with both Futura and U.N.K.L.E. to release the masterpiece you see above, cleverly nicknamed the “Dunkle”. This sneaker marked a very distinct point in the SB brand as it appealed to fashionistos and skaters alike. It’s simple colorway of black, white, and pink (though only black is credited on the SB box) made this sneaker stand out from the jump. The craziest part of the shoe however is Futura’s artwork from the U.N.K.L.E. album cover adorning almost the entire upper of the shoe. The artwork seems to be applied in a very unique manner, similar to the method used in printing newspapers. Finer details such as Futura’s signature “atomic” symbol and the band’s name “UNKLE” are embroidered onto the inner and outter heel flaps of each sneaker. Additionally the Dunkle features some of the best materials used on an SB or any Nike for that matter: full grain black leather, white patent leather, and supple pink nubuck! You would be hard pressed to find any sneaker previous to this release that used pink nubuck let alone this combination of colors and materials. The insoles come with “Mo Wax” printed on them, denoting one of the labels the “Never,Never, Land” album was released under. Extra white SB laces finish off the package and all are contained in a pink SB box of course. With the Futura inspirped Livestrong FLOM’s releasing soon, true collectors are surely reminiscing on other monumental sneakers from Futura. The Dunkle is surely one that springs to mind immediately during these moments of sneaker nostalgia. So if you have these gems in your collection, dig them out of the abyss of your sneaker closet, hold them near and dear, look deep into the eyes of Futura’s Nosferatu and wish these Dunkles live on forever as they are truly one of the dopest sneakers ever released by Nike SB!
