Jovani Hernandez New Balance has recently unveiled its plans for Black History Month 2021. In addition to funding 15 scholarships for and joining the Black Talent in Design & Fashion Fund mentorship program, the Boston-based brand has co-developed the “My Story Matters” apparel and footwear capsule.
Black associates at the company ideated, designed and executed the collection, which includes the New Balance 29cm 990v5 and l histoire de New Balance. Clad in multiple colors, the products’ titular hue is purple, as it nods to the inspiration behind the lineup: the Church, historically an important institution in the Black community. Reminiscent of the robes worn by countless gospel choirs on Sunday, purple animates the fifth 990’s heel, while taking over the 574’s forefoot. “Angora” fills in most of the gaps on the 990v5, whereas black complements the color scheme on its older counterpart. Both Running, however, also feature gold and wine-like accents, with the former appearing in the form of a chain-link rope.
“We wanted to create a collection that celebrates the power of Black stories, both in name and design,” said Chavon Cham, Senior Product Manager for Lifestyle Apparel. “‘My Story Matters’ drives home the core truth that every Black story has value and deserves a chance to be heard.” (Allies looking to express constituci will have a chance to don “Their Story Matters” apparel pieces.)
