Wales Bonner, the luxury fashion brand, collaborated with adidas to enhance the iconic SL72 silhouette. The Wales Bonner x adidas SL72 "
Green" edition, closely resembling the "Maroon" version from the 2020 collection but in a near reverse-colourway, reflects the knit motif of the upcoming collection. While the
Samba is the focal point in the collection, it's important not to overlook this edition.
The
SL72, crafted by Adidas for its sponsored athletes, earned its place in the company's history as the first shoe to sport the trefoil logo. It was named "
Super Light" (SL) and intended for the 1972 Munich Olympics. Winning medalists were seen wearing the silhouette on podiums, which earned it the nickname "podium shoe."
Wales Bonner breathed new life into this classic shoe by replacing its lightweight nylon with traditional knit along the upper's side wall, while the hemp-like stitch weaves together the heel's rear paneling. It draws inspiration from Afro-Atlantic aesthetics apparent in Bonner's work. The signature 3-Stripes features a burnt orange tinge, an ode to yet another fan-favorite, the
adidas Originals Jamaica. This tint design rests on a classic SL72 midsole, preserving the original silhouette.
