On September 12, 1984, Michael Jordan signed his rookie contract with the Chicago Bulls. Taken third overall in the 1984 NBA Draft, Jordan entered his professional career as an NCAA champion with major upside. Turns out major meant game-changing, with six NBA titles, five NBA MVPs, and a league-best 30.1 career points per game. Jordan’s five-year deal averaged $1 million per year, then the third highest contract ever given to an NBA rookie. Jordan averaged 28.2 points per game en route to Rookie of the Year honors, and his season highlights included an All-Star Game appearance and fines for wearing a “banned” black and red colorway of the Nike Air Ship (and subsequently Air Jordan 1) early on. Relive Jordan’s draft moment below and some highlights from that first year.
