When Michael Jordan started wearing his black and red Nikes in 1985, the NBA league office didn’t take kindly. Violation of the league uniformity rule, which said kicks had to match a player’s uniform with balanced color. MJ’s kicks exceeded that balance, so the NBA started fining MJ $5,000 for every game he wore them. Nike paid the fines – the incident was great advertising – and Air Jordan 1 sales soared to the tune of $130 million. Jordan Brand honored this marketing moment in 2011 with the Air Jordan 1 “Banned” edition. The colorway is the standard classic Black/Red but includes an “X” on each heel as a subtle nod to the shoe’s so-called banishment all those years ago. The “Banned” 1 is rumored to return this fall.
