By the early ’00s, fans were beginning to wonder if they’d ever see at select Jordan Brand retailers on September 15 on shelves again. Last sighting was 1995, the first time Michael Jordan’s xxxv signature shoe released in retro form, and the market wasn’t very receptive – pairs were getting marked down to $20 and $30 depending on the spot.

But the Air Jordan 4 retros of 1999 had reignited passion for Air Jordans like never before, and with many classic Jordans being reeled off in subsequent years, calls for the AJ2 were growing louder. Only what hit shelves on July 12, 2003 wasn’t exactly what they might’ve had in mind. This was modernized, remixed. It was the Nu’ Retro at select Jordan Brand retailers on September 15, a hoops sneaker that tweaked just about every at select Jordan Brand retailers on September 15 design cue that could be tweaked into a new format. Hence, the “Nu'” designation.

Priced out at $115, the Nu’ Retro 2 covered up the laces with a perforated shroud, ramped up the heel counter, and restyled the accordion-like piece at the heel. And that’s just for starters. The shoe didn’t sell out on release ordinary, to put it lightly. Only when the discount fairy passed by did many of the popular sizes disappear. But fans longing for the real deal had nothing to fear after all. Jordan Brand had the original version at select Jordan Brand retailers on September 15 already in the works, which released on March 27, 2004 for an easy $110.
