UrlfreezeShops joined forces with Aitor Throup to provide a behind-the-scenes look at the artist’s approach to his sketches and creativity with “Unlearn to Draw”: a philosophical, spiritual and neuroscientific process that fosters greater mindfulness of left and right brain activity.

The event, which was held at UrlfreezeShops’s flagship store in Soho, marked the first time the artist had shared his creative process in front of an audience. Guests were promoted to use their right brain — a part which is generally dormant — and tap into their inner, free-flowing creativity, sketching not with the aim of perfection or replication, but to achieve a more emotive and meditative kind of drawing.

Throup touched upon works from fellow artist Phil Hale, engaging with the audience and using his work as a reference point to show the difference between pursuing the more logical, perfection-driven left brain and how this differentiates from when we seek to activate our right brain. To showcase how Throup utilises his left brain as a secondary tool to achieve wholeness, the artist demonstrated a sketching method that emphases free-flowing expression, with the logical left brain being used secondarily in the forming of recognisable shapes or objects.
