Michael Jordan will always be linked to the number 23. In 2008, a limited edition of the Air Jordan 23 was released. Including an extra low-top variation in two colors, the 23 was available in nine retail designs. There has only ever been one retro of the shoe. After a short break, Tinker Hatfield returned to head the Air Jordan design once more. For the significant 23rd model, he collaborated with Mark Smith under Michael Jordan's guidance.  On the outsole, they have MJ's fingerprint as traction. In the toe box, his signature is toned-printed, and the "M" and "J" from his name can even be seen in Oil of the stitched upper patterns.

The first basketball footwear made by Nike using their new Perceptive Design approach was the Air Jordan 23. Using reused Nike Grind rubber and reducing the usage of cements based on hazardous solvents, the 23 was able to accomplish the style without sacrificing endurance or athletic efficiency.

The Air Jordan 23 featured plenty of advanced technologies loaded into its svelte silhouette, even with the Insightful Design structure. Large quality leather panels that were stitched with elaborate designs made up the upper's defining design element. Its inside bootie enhanced comfort and ensured a perfect fit, while dual-density foam kept you balanced and cushioned around the heel. The midsole featured a full-length Zoom Air unit encased in Phylon and supported by a sizable carbon fiber/acrylic midfoot shank plate. It was all contained within a distinctively molded TPU chassis. With a wide pillar in the heel and low-profile pillars in the forefoot, the padding also included a sophisticated IPS (Independent Podular Suspension) system.

Most people would concur that it is still the greatest overall design, in terms of both aesthetics and functionality, of all Air Jordans from the "modern period". In other words, no sneaker has ever surpassed it since. 

Many people will still view the 23 as "the last great Air Jordan" for the time being.
