The Nike Air Foamposite has come a long way from its original roots. Created to fill the need of a lightweight material that was less labor-intensive during manufacturing, Foamposite technology was developed by John Tawney and Toren Orzeck (he named it ‘Fomposite’) of the Nike Advanced Products Engineering team. Aside from its performance appeal (Foamposite material molded to your foot and the shoe featured Zoom Air cushioning), the Air Foamposite was an instant eye-catcher; as the story goes, Penny Hardaway fell in love with the sneaker the moment he laid eyes on it, and the Air Foamposite One became his. In the year 2011, where most Nike Retro models have more or less taken a back seat to Nike’s more recent performance models, Foamposite has firmly become a fashion culture phenomenon.

Foamposites have always been cult hits in the D.C./MD/VA area, but with so many colorways that have released in One and Pro form, you’d be hard pressed to find anyone that either doesn’t own or hasn’t considered buying a pair. The Air Foamposite has become the ‘it’ shoe as of late, with the focus for upcoming releases emphasizing dazzling and tempting colorways, like Electrolime or even the proposed ‘Galaxy’ sample. One such colorway that’s become a common verbage when discussing sneakers of today is the ‘Gucci’, which is inspired by the signature green/red/green ribbon seen on many of its fine goods. This custom pair of Foamposites, done by sole-swapping mad scientist, Jason Negron, utilizes that luxurious combination, using the ‘Pine’ Foamposite Pro as the base with the translucent outsole dyed a nice shade of red. Other emblems, like the Swoosh at the forefoot and heel, as well as the FOAMPOSITE embroidering on the heel-tab, have also been dyed red for further Gucci effect.
