To the uninformed, the name “Daniel Johnston” may not mean anything. But to countless family members, friends, strangers and creatives, the American singer-songwriter and visual artist’s name meant the world. Recently, Vans teamed up with the Hi, How Are You foundation founded in honor of the late Johnston in order to raise awareness and resources for mental health.
Comprised of the Slip-On, Sk8-Hi and Authentic, the three-pair collection features classic “OFF THE WALL” brand-related details (such as checkerboard patterns), and combines them with the iconic illustrations from Johnston’s catalog. Artwork from the lo-fi figure’s “Respect” and “Don’t Be Scared” albums land on the capsule’s checkerboard print. Apparel also makes part of the collection, with a tee and pullover hoodie, among other items, also delivering eye-catching illustrations from Johnston, who passed away in 2019 to a suspected heart attack. Together, Vans and the Hi, How Are You foundation champion creative expression and mental well-being just as Johnston did over the course of 58 years.
