It’s hard to pinpoint one specific moment that made the adidas Superstar the cultural icon it is today. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar made it fashionable on court when he first wore the rubber-toed shoes in the 1970s. Run D.M.C. forever enshrined it as “cool” in the decade after with the 1986 hit single “My Adidas”.
Among the many integral chapters of the Superstar story, 2005’s 35th Anniversary celebration stands out particularly to shoe collectors. Arriving just a couple of years after BAPE’s monumental collab in 2003, adidas released 35 different versions of the Superstar — many of them collaborations with admirers including the likes of Undefeated, Union, and Footpatrol — spawning a global hunt for the entire set. Looking back, that fabled set might be the biggest collaboration in history.
Surprisingly enough, one of the most sought-after of the near three-dozen is being re-released on June 21st. Neighborhood’s eye-catching black-and-cream Superstar, complete with thick branded laces, skull and crossbones and the kanji at the heel, is dropping again in perfect retro form.
Neighborhood’s founder first dropped the blancas on his personal Instagram over the weekend, and now the choicest of retailers have corroborated the June 22nd release date with an MSRP of $160 (also Footpatrol on the adidas Confirmed App).
This is possibly a one-off as a 30th Anniversary celebration for Neighborhood, but it begs the question: is adidas planning to bring back other members from that 2005 collection? There are too many great ones to name, but we’ll be sure to update this article as this further develops.
