As one of the breakout silhouettes of the last three years, the New Balance 550 has put pressure on the competition to capture a late 1980s basketball shoe aesthetic. For its next ensemble, the design by Steven Smith has opted for a versatile white, grey, and black color combination.
At quick glance, the unreleased pair resembles styles from the beloved Aimé Leon Dore imprint, but closer inspection cements the sneaker as a solo-effort. Standard smooth and perforated leather panels make up the majority of the NB 550’s top-half, with fabric layers peeking out around the upper heel area. Branding hits throughout the shoe indulge in a greyscale mix. Sole units rooted in ’89 further opt for a series of understated tones, making for tooling that doesn’t distract from New Balance’s clean aesthetic.
Enjoy product images of the pair ahead, and anticipate a newbalance.com launch soon.
In related sneaker news, the Boston-based brand recently launched the New Balance US basketball sneaker with the help of Zach Lavine from the Chicago Bulls.
