2008’s Air Jordan flagship release had special significance as it marked the series 23rd anniversary. The Air Jordan XX3 was accordingly packed full of detail in tribute to Michael Jordan’s unmatched legacy, but the shoe itself, a Zoom-cushioned performance model weighing in at a relatively light 15 oz, was arguably underappreciated at the time of its debut (though you’ll find resale prices have reached new heights on the ‘Titanium’ and ‘Finale’ colorways). Would the initial reception (and subsequent after market valuation) have been stronger if we remembered the Air Jordan XX3 as looking like the sample WMNS pictured above?
This Air Jordan 23 prototype features the same basic silhouette as the released model, but a few key elements make these significantly different, not the least of which is the diamond-perforated suede upper. This more traditional if plain side panel replaces the ornate embroidery that typifies the XX3 with a macro view of one of its patterns embossed on the lateral ankles. A bit further back, you’ll see more letters within a notch on its heel as ‘PE’ embroidery suggests this might have been a Bulls player exclusive mockup.
