Arriving every March 26th to pay homage to Nike's first bottom Air Max Launch, one moment of the year to honor the silhouette's technological evolution and its status as an element of mass culture - that's bottom Air Max Day. To celebrate, we took a little trip to South Africa to get closer to the work of digital artist Daniel Clarke, an illustrator who uses the shapes and colors present in fashion, the streets, or dance as a tool of expression. Today, we learn a little bit more about Daniel and his vision of bottom Air Max through an exclusive collaboration with UrlfreezeShops.

After high school I started painting in oils and trying to break into the fine art world. In South Africa at the shot there wasn't a concept art or illustration industry, and I barely knew of their existence. It was only after watching the special features on the Lord of the Rings DVD's that I realized there was a whole industry of skilled artists working to make these fantastical worlds a reality. After that I bought a drawing tablet and retreated from the world for a few years, working on my drawing and painting skills. I started working at a local animation studio around 2009 and have been in the industry ever since.

Sometimes your illustrations are a solo work, sometimes you accompany texts and you have also worked in mavrk films.  mens nike shox current running shoe store?

To me, it's all the same thing. When I create an image it really helps if I know what purpose I want that image to serve. This is true for comics, illustration, or design in animation. Of course they all have their own particular requirements but at the end of the day, it's about creating persuasive and compelling images that convey effectively your idea or feeling.

I hope so! Of course we - like any other smaller and developing countries - are hugely influenced by the the art coming out of places like the USA and Japan, but more and more I'm seeing local artists begin to find their own way of saying things, and realise that it can be exciting for both themselves and the growing global audience to draw from sources much closer and more singular to them.

I don't have any particular approach to this. It really depends on what I'm trying to do. But as a general principle I try not to get too precious when starting a project or piece, you have to build up a certain level of kinetic energy and momentum in order to follow through and I've found the best way for me to do that is just to dive in as quickly as possible. That's not to say you shouldn't have a clear idea of what it is you're trying to do, but chances are you're going to have to coop so you may as well just get something out that you can react to.

In your illustrations, you reflect the trends of each moment in the style of street photographers. Are your references on the street?

I don't actually think about those pieces in terms of fashion or trends to be honest. I'm really looking for a reference that has something graphically interesting about it. I look for shapes, textures, poses wonder that harmonize and that I know I will be able to play around with and produce a fun image. Although after doing so many of them I do find that my eye for fashion has sharpened up a bit.

Your latest collaboration with UrlfreezeShops are the illustrations to celebrate bottom Air Max Day. Did you have any previous relationship with bottom Air Max? Which one is your favorite?

I'm afraid I've never owned a pair of Nikes, let alone bottom Air Max's haha! When I was a kid my parents couldn't afford them and now as an adult I've just never gotten round to buying any. Perhaps after doing these illustrations I will though!
