Carbon-Plated Midsole Propels You Forward

A runner in the ASICS Metaspeed Sky Plus.

The ASICS Metaspeed Sky+ isn’t the first shoe to use a carbon plate to maximize energy return, and it certainly won’t be the last. Carbon plates are becoming increasingly common in racing footwear amongst elites and beginners alike.

The full-length carbon plate featured in the Metaspeed Sky+ sits sandwiched between two layers of responsive FF BLAST TURBO foam. The lightweight, rigid plate helps the foam compress upon landings and snap back during take-offs, propelling you forward. The result is an energetic, springy ride.

“These feel firm and propulsive. They provide just enough pep and bounce while remaining rigid enough to propel you forward. I cruised through some threshold intervals in these and my stride felt smooth the whole way,” Caroline says.

ASICS shoe designers adjusted the placement of the carbon fiber plate, helping runners extend their stride during takeoff. ASICS says this helps stride runners, runners who take longer steps to go faster, while the new Metaspeed Edge+ is designed for cadence runners, runners who take more steps to go faster.

“This shoe has one mind, and it’s all about going fast. Once I start picking up the pace this shoe really sings. It’s stable enough, but also springy and efficient,” Nate says.

A grippy rubber outsole improves traction and grip while increasing the shoe’s durability, so you can enjoy them for plenty of miles to come.

Stripped Down Upper is Ready to Race

Three runners run in the ASICS Metaspeed Sky Plus.

The ASICS Metaspeed Sky+ is topped off with a thin, breathable jacquard mesh upper. It feels lighter and more secure than the previous version of the Metaspeed Sky.

“These fit just how you’d want a racing shoe to fit. Snug, but not too tight. The upper is super thin but still feels supportive and secure,” Caroline says.

“The upper feels light, airy and breathable. It has a nice mix of rigidity and support while maximizing airflow. You can practically see through the upper, that’s how thin it is! This is also a wide-foot friendly shoe, which my wide feet appreciate,” Nate says.

A thin, suede-like tongue sits atop your foot while an ever-so-slightly padded heel collar holds you in place. ASICS stays true to their sustainability initiative by making the upper material with 20 percent recycled polyester.

The ASICS Metaspeed Sky+ is designed to go even faster than the previous version, thanks to the addition of a full-length carbon fiber plate that’s been repositioned to provide maximum energy return. A redesigned upper shaves weight while providing a more secure fit.

The ASICS Metaspeed Sky+ appears to be slightly heavier than the previous version, but reviewers still thought this shoe felt light as a feather. And while the shoe is catered towards stride runners, our cadence runner, Caroline, still benefited from the snappy carbon-fiber plate and energetic foam.

“I can’t say whether or not this shoe is better for stride runners than the next pair, but I certainly felt fast and smooth running in these,” she says.

Final Thoughts

Overall, the ASICS Metaspeed Sky+ is a great option for runners who want to get the most out of themselves on race day. With a full-length carbon-fiber plate, energetic midsole foam and a lightweight, airy upper, this shoe is built for breaking records.

“The Metaspeed Sky+ can certainly go toe to toe with the best carbon plated racers out there. It feels like a mix between the Nike Vaporfly NEXT% and the Saucony Endorphin Pro – it has the stiffness of the Endorphin Pro with the pep and bounce of the NEXT%. I felt fast and energetic running in these shoes,” Caroline says.
